Watch the step-by-step video tutorial:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Fold and cut the tissue paper
- Cut a piece of tissue paper in half (the remaining piece should be about 10 by 17 inches).
- Fold the tissue paper in half lengthwise.
- Then fold it in half the other way. Repeat another 2 times (3 folds total).
- Begin making cuts up from the short side of the tissue paper.Make the cut about 1/4 inch wide and continue until there’s between 1/2 to 3/4 inches uncut at the top.
- Repeat, creating even cuts until you reach the other side.
- Open up the folded edge and cut up the middle of this piece. This ensures that all pieces of the fringe are roughly the same size.
- You should now have a fringed piece of tissue paper that will make up the sweeping part of the broom.
Step 3: Connect the lollipop to the pencil
- Attach a lollipop to a pencil with 1 to 2 pieces of painter’s tape or washi tape (something that can easily be removed later).
Step 4: Wrap the tissue paper around the “stick” base
- Unfold the tissue paper and place it with the short edge towards you.
- Set the lollipop and pencil bundle onto the end of the tissue paper. The top of the lollipop stick should be just inside the uncut edge of the paper.
- Begin rolling the tissue paper around the pencil and lollipop. Hold the paper tight at the top while you do this.
- Continue wrapping the tissue paper around the pencil and lollipop until you reach the end.Adjust the tissue paper as you wrap it, keeping the fringe pointed down and the top part fairly even.
- Optional: Once you’ve finished wrapping, keep the tissue paper in place with a bit of glue tape.(Be careful you don’t rip the tissue paper when you do this!)
Step 5: Finish off the broom with a bow
- Cut a 10 inch piece of thin black ribbon. Tie the ribbon around the top of the tissue paper and make a bow.
- Your witch broom lollipop is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- You can attach a gift tag to the ribbon with a name and/or a fun Halloween message.
- If you don’t have ribbon you can secure the tissue paper with a thin hair elastic or rubber band.
What lollipops are the best for making witch broom lollipops?
We love tootsie pops around here, but any type of lollipop will work. You can use a dum dum or even a flat sucker to make these broom pops. If you use a smaller lollipop you’ll probably want to cut the tissue paper a bit smaller.
Do I have to use tissue paper to make a witch broom lollipop?
We like the look of the tissue paper and the swishing sound it makes when you move the broom around. But you can also use newsprint or brown kraft paper to make this part of the broom.
Cut the paper to about 10 by 17 inches. And keep in mind that kraft paper is harder to cut through, so you won’t be able to fold it as many times.
If you have a smaller lollipop, crepe paper streamers will also work.
Where can I buy Halloween themed pencils?
We bought our Halloween pencils at the craft store, but you can also find them online. Or check the dollar store once it’s close to Halloween. Our local store has both pens and pencils with fun and spooky decorations on them.
Do I have to use a pencil to make these Halloween lollipops?
If you can’t find pencils you like, or want to give your witch’s broom another look, you can also insert the lollipop stick into a straw. Try to find striped straws in purple, lime green, and/or orange. You can also use a bamboo straw for a realistic looking broom handle.
There are two ways can you stop the lollipop from sliding out of the straw. One, wrap tape around the bottom of the lollipop stick to make it bigger. Or two, add some hot glue inside the straw opening to make it smaller.
Not only are these festive witch broom lollipops fun to make, they’re also fun to play with! It’s such a cute and delicious Halloween craft, offering two treats in one fun package.
