Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Prepare the supplies
- Print our free Halloween gift tags! There’s a link in the materials list above, with more options below the tutorial.
- Cut 2 lengths of ribbon about 16 inches each. We used a plain color 1/8 inch wide and a Halloween patterned ribbon 1/4 inch wide.
- Then gather a stick from outside that’s between 8 and 10 inches long. Scraggly looking ones are perfect for the handle of a witch’s broomstick!
- You’ll also need 2 small paper bags for each treat bag. Read more below the tutorial on the exact size and where to find them.
Step 3: Cut the paper bags
- Grab the first bag and fold the bottom of the bag together. Then cut strips down the bag, making them about 3/8 inch wide. Don’t cut the bottom of the bag.
- Unfold the bag and cut the corners apart so they’re the same width as the other strips. At this point you can cut all the way down the bag.
- Repeat around the whole bag, so you have the bottom intact but the sides cut all the way down.
- Fold the second bag down a few inches. This will give you a visual mark.
- Unfold the bag and cut the top of the bag into strips, going down to the fold line.
Step 4: Fill the bag
- Open up the first bag so the fringe is going out on each side. Then set the partially cut bag on top, lining up the bottoms.
- Gather all kinds of cute Halloween treats to put in the bag.
- Fill the gift bag and then place the stick in the center, gathering the bag around it.
- Lift up the strips from the outside bag, gathering them into the center as well. Try to keep them going straight up and down.
- Then tie the thin ribbon around the bag in a double knot. This can be tricky to do, so it’s great to have one person hold the bag together while another ties the ribbon.
- Punch a hole in the gift tag and slide it onto the ribbon. Tie the ribbon in a bow.
- Tie the other ribbon into a bow around the bag as well. Then trim the ends of both ribbons, cutting them on an angle.
- Your witches broom treat bag is complete!
- Have fun making more treat bags using different colors of ribbon and all the printable label designs.
Helpful Tips:
- Print the full-color gift tags for a quick finishing touch, or choose the color-your-own version so kids can decorate them!
- If you can’t find a stick that’s the right size, use a Halloween-themed pencil or a wooden dowel for the broomstick instead.
- Don’t overfill the treat bag. Leaving some empty space at the top makes it much easier to gather the paper around the broomstick and tie everything securely with ribbon.

What size paper bag should I use for these Halloween treat bags?
We used small kraft paper bags that are similar to mini lunch bags. You may see them sold as #1 kraft paper bags or 1 lb treat bags. Our bags are roughly 3 inches wide, 2 inches deep, and 6-1/2 inches tall.
This size holds a good amount of Halloween treats while still making a broom that’s easy to handle. You can find small kraft treat bags online or at craft stores such as Michaels.
We originally tried making the brooms with regular paper sandwich bags. The bags themselves worked fine, but they needed a very large, almost branch-sized stick for the broom handle to look proportional. Not exactly reasonable to put on a Halloween snack table. Therefore we prefer the smaller bags, as they make a much more manageable broom.

What can I put inside the witches broom treat bags?
You can fill your broom treat bags with candy, small toys, or a mixture of both. Try some of the following:
- Halloween chocolates
- Lip balm
- Stickers
- Temporary tattoos
- Spider rings
- Other small Halloween toys
- Halloween slime

These witches broom treat bags are such a fun way to make Halloween treats feel a little more magical! They’re simple to assemble, easy to customize, and make a cute presentation for candy, small toys, or party favours.
Add one of the printable gift tags and a festive ribbon, and your little broom is ready to hand out. They’re a creative Halloween treat idea that’s just as much fun to give as it is to receive!
