Create stunning embroidered Easter eggs using cardboard and embroidery floss! This simple craft is a great way to add texture and colour to your holiday decor.
Print a free Easter egg template of your choice and cut out an egg.Find a link in the materials list above, with more details found below the tutorial.
Trace the egg shape onto a piece of cardboard and cut the cardboard egg.
Draw a design on the cardboard egg (or use one of our patterned Easter egg templates).
Step 3: Punch holes along the pattern
Place the cardboard on a cork trivet (or piece of Styrofoam) and begin punching the needle through each point of the design (where you want the thread to come in and out).
Repeat to punch throughout the whole pattern. You may also want to bring the needle through each hole again, wiggling it around to make the holes big enough for the needle and embroidery floss to come through easily.
Step 4: Begin stitching the pattern
Thread embroidery floss (all 6 strands) onto a needle and tie a knot at the end.(You can also use yarn.)
Bring the threaded needle up through the first hole from the back. Pull all the way until the knot stops the thread.(If you don't want to make a knot you can also tape the end of the thread to the back of the cardboard.)
Bring the needle back down through the next hole, pulling the thread taut. This will create an angled design across the line you drew earlier. Then bring the needle back up through the next hole.
Repeat until the end of the first line. Then bring your needle under several of the threads on the back, securing it in place.
Cut off the excess thread and remove this colour floss from your needle.
Step 5: Continue stitching in new colours
Attach a new colour of thread to your needle for the second row. To keep the design neat, go through the holes in the same order.
Once you've done a few rows or design elements and are happy with the colours you've chosen, make a pattern by going back to your first colour.
Continue until the bottom of the egg, filling the design completely. Finish off the thread just like you did the others.
Your embroidered cardboard Easter egg is complete!
