Create your own adorable pom pom hedgehog with this beginner-friendly craft. Older kids and adults will love turning basic pom poms into sweet hedgehog friends!
Holding a 5-1/2 cm (2-1/5 inch) pom pom maker together, wrap white yarn around the right 2/3 of it (about 70 times).
Cut the yarn and use a latch hook tool to secure the end. This is optional, but ensures the yarn won't unravel while you work with the next colour.
Wrap taupe yarn around the whole half of the pom pom maker (about 15 times). Again, cut the yarn and secure with the latch hook tool. (You'll do this after every colour change.)
Then wrap dark brown yarn about 15 times.
Wrap grey yarn next (about 10 times).
Add the taupe yarn again, wrapping about 10 times. Then dark brown 10 times and grey 10 times. As always, cut each colour when you're finished with it and secure with the latch hook.
Switch to the other half of the pom pom maker. Wrap the taupe yarn about 15 times, dark brown 15 times, and grey 15 times.
Repeat, wrapping each of the colours 10 to 15 times. Finish with the grey.
Latch the pom pom maker together.
Cut an 18 inch strand of taupe yarn.
Slide scissors into the gap between the two sides of the pom pom maker and cut through the middle of yarn.
Wrap the taupe yarn strand along the gap between the 2 sides, pull tight, and tie a double knot. Make the knot where the white patch on the pom pom meets the other colours. Remove the pom pom from the maker.
Step 3: Make the pom pom body
On a 7 cm (2-3/4 inch) pom pom maker, wrap white yarn about 120 times, covering the right 2/3 of the maker.
Covering the whole half, wrap each of these 15 times: taupe, dark brown, and grey. Then wrap the taupe another 10 times.
Wrap the dark brown 7 times so it covers the left half of the pom pom maker. Repeat with light grey and taupe.
Switch to the second half of the pom pom maker. Repeat the taupe, dark brown, grey pattern, wrapping each colour about 15 to 20 times before switching to the next colour.Continue until this half is full, finishing with the dark brown.
Latch the pom pom maker, cut through the yarn, and tie an 18 inch strand of taupe yarn around the pom pom. Tie the knot where the white patch on the pom pom meets the other colours. Then remove the pom pom from the maker.
Step 4: Connect the pom poms
Use the long strands of yarn to tie the 2 pom poms tightly together. Make sure the white sections are on the same side. Then cut off the excess yarn tails.
Give the pom poms a "haircut", trimming down the excess yarn to create a fuzzy hedgehog.
Step 5: Make the hedgehog features
Grab a regular pom pom (not the yarn kind) in a beige/cream colour and trim it to create a cone shape with a flat bottom. This will be the hedgehog's snout.
Then glue a tiny brown pom pom to the tip for the nose.
Cut a circle, about 1/2 inch wide, from beige or cream felt. Cut the circle in half to make the ears.
To make legs for the hedgehog, begin by making knots in the taupe yarn. Make a knot near the end of the yarn and make another on top of it. Create another 2 knots about 3/4 inch away. Then wrap the yarn around itself between the knots, about 20 times. Cut the yarn from the ball and secure the end with tacky glue. Repeat to make 4 legs total.
Step 6: Attach the features
Separate the yarn on the smaller head pom pom where the white yarn meets the coloured yarn, making a little trench for the ears to sit.Apply tacky glue to the flat edge of the ears and place the glued edge of the ears in the trench.
Add glue to the flat back of the snout, placing it on the center of the face.
Place tiny dots of glue on 5 mm black beads and set them as eyes above the snout.
Add a line of glue to one side of each leg. Place the top legs horizontally, facing in towards the center, and the bottom legs vertical, pointing up towards the head.
Your pom pom hedgehog is complete!
Then make your pom pom hedgie some friends. You can even make a baby hedgehog using one larger pom pom!
