Print one of our free honeycomb ornament templates. You can find one link in the materials list above and the rest below this tutorial.(We recommend printing the template on cardstock or tracing the paper onto cardboard for a sturdy template that's easy to trace.)
Place the template onto coloured paper and cut out the shape.
Repeat, cutting out a total of 18 pieces.
Step 3: Fold and glue the paper pieces
Fold each of the pattern pieces in half vertically.
Unfold a template piece. Add a thin horizontal line of glue from the middle crease out to the edge.
Fold the paper in half again, connecting the two sides with glue.Repeat for all other pieces.
Step 4: Connect the paper pieces
Add 2 horizontal lines of glue to one side of the folded shape.Make these glue lines towards the top and bottom.
Set one of the other folded shapes on top of the paper with glue, lining up the edges as you connect the 2 pieces of paper.
Repeat this process until all the folded shapes are glued together.(Add the 2 lines of glue, set the next piece on top, etc.)
Make sure the shapes are well lined up and then add a couple binder clips to the straight edge. This will ensure the shapes stay neatly together as the glue dries.(If you don't have binder clips you can also place a heavy book or baking dish on top of the papers.)
Step 5: Add an ornament hanger
Cut an 8 inch piece of string. Fold it in half and make a knot, creating a looped ornament hanger.
Add glue to the top flat edge of the bundle (the side with the folds) and set the knot into the glue. The loop of the hanger should extend past the top of the paper.
Allow the glue to dry for at least several hours or, ideally, overnight.
Step 6: Connect the two sides
Remove the binder clips carefully once the glue is dry.
Slowly unfold the ornament, carefully opening it up and bringing the 2 outsides together (eg. the former bottom and top of the bundle should be touching).
Open the ornament slightly and add 2 horizontal lines of glue to one of the inside (former outside) pieces.Make the lines of glue in the same spots as before.
Connect the 2 sides, pressing them together. Then use binder clips (or paper clips) to keep the ornament together as the glue dries.
Remove the binder clips once the glue is completely dry.
