Today my blog, One Little Project, turns 1! It’s been a very interesting year, to say the least! I’ve been introduced to an extraordinary world of talented moms and bloggers. Some of us have beautiful blogs. Some of us have profitable blogs. Some of us have something somewhere in between. But the one thing we all have in common, is that we all work very hard on this thing called blogging!
I know it wasn’t an elegant beginning, but I’d love to share with you how I got started blogging. I was on maternity leave with my daughter Kate, and I spent many hours surfing the internet as I nursed her.
One day, I randomly Googled “Can you make money blogging?”. I had never followed anyone’s blog, I didn’t really know what a blog was at that point. The results of that search were eye opening.
Much to my surprise, the answer was YES.
I stumbled across this fabulous article at Christian PF called How to make money with a blog – and more importantly – how he made more money blogging than he did at his day job. (Bob, if you ever read this, thank you. I can never repay you for the help and inspiration you gave me!).
Was it really possible?! I followed his instructions to a T and got my blog up and running. I posted an article every day for nearly 4 months. It almost drove me crazy, but I absolutely loved it!
Shhh… don’t tell anyone…
I am a blogger for two reasons:
- I love blogging.
- I make money blogging.
I hope this doesn’t make you think less of me, but if I didn’t make any money, I probably wouldn’t be doing this. But on the other hand, if I didn’t love writing this blog, I also wouldn’t be doing it.
I made $2,500 my first year blogging
It isn’t going to pay the mortgage, or put my kids through university, and it is soooooooo far below minimum wage based on the hours that I have put in that sometimes it makes me cringe. But honestly, I am over the moon about it!! Because there is only one way to go – up! When I first started blogging, everything I read said I wouldn’t make any money the first year. So, the way I see it, if you are making any money blogging your first year, you are doing well. It’s like starting a business. It takes time to build up your revenue. It’s also going to take time to learn HOW to build up your revenue. No one is born knowing SEO, or which ad networks work the best or what time of day is the best to post on Facebook. It takes time (years) to learn those things.
Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. It’s hard, thankless work, that most people don’t understand. Haven’t you had those awkward moments, where someone finds out you have a blog and they say “Oh, you have a blog… good for you…” as they raise their eye brow, assuming that you must only post about the cute things your kids said the other day.
If you are on this blogging journey, it’s a tough road ahead, but I truly believe that if you are persistent and you work hard, you can achieve things you never dreamed were possible. It is such an amazing opportunity!
I have been overwhelmed at how kind and generous the blogging community is. To each and every one of you who has taken the time to comment on my blog this past year, thank you. To all of my readers who are interested in what I post each week, thank you. I wouldn’t be here without you!

I am so impressed! Thanks for sharing your milestones and what worked for you and what didn;t. I wish I kept better blog records. I think I will for 2014. I think I’m right there with you on blog income (a little lesS) but you have WAY higher stats! I need to work on mine! 🙂
Debbie @ One Little Project says
OK, if your income is similar to mine, but your stats are way lower, that is pretty amazing! I have no idea how to make money without having about a gazillion people visit my blog!
Krystal says
It’s the blog reviews and groups like Pollinate, Social Fabric, Clever Girls, etc. that boost my blog income. I see very little revenue from advertising networks… wah! 🙁
Debbie @ One Little Project says
I’ll have to try all those groups. Thanks for the suggestion! Ad networks are so tricky. I really wish I could increase my CTR, but with our blog topics that just might be how it goes.

I am SO impressed! Congrats on one year!

Your story is so similar to mine. I googled the same thing… and read the same article! I know those raised eyebrow looks all too well… I loved reading this because I relate on so many levels! I’m coming up on one year in February! I’ve recently started to see some money coming in and it makes the hard work pay off. Not as much as you, so I look forward to your tips on how you’ve done it!
Debbie @ One Little Project says
That’s too funny that we googled the same thing and read the same article! I’m so happy to hear that I’m not the only one!! 🙂

Thanks Jessica! Just keep working hard. The more posts you have the more traffic you’ll get. I think I applied to Adsense when I had 30 posts, so that was after one month and then it took another month before I actually made any money from them. I applied first when I had 20 posts, but I got rejected. My favourite affiliate group is https://www.shareasale.com but http://www.escalatenetwork.com/publishers/?referral_id=13186 is probably easier to try. Amazon affiliates is another good option. I hope that helps!

Wow! Great first year. I’m coming up on 1 year and I think I’ve made mmmm .04c!!! 🙂 Congrats. I guess I need to do some research.

That’s awesome! Can’t wait to see your tips 🙂

Happy 1 year to you, Debbie! I’ve been blogging for almost 4 years (crazy, eh?) and am making a nice living at it. Most of my revenue comes from my education site (which hit one million pageviews in its first six months). We also sell downloaded teaching products…
My advice? Diversify your revenue streams. Ad networks are great for some, but I think having a product or book is key. On the classroom creative, we have two ad networks, private advertisers, sponsored content, and we sell teaching products that are downloadable!
momnivore’s dilemma is more a labor of love and sharing for me. It’s not my site to monetize, really. I do campaigns here and there, but because it’s mostly about my son’s autism, it feels weird taking money…We all blog for different reasons, but I feel that now is a great time as ever to start. That blog is more about my story…
I started blogging before pinterest and terms like SEO weren’t even around the blogging world much. If you dig around in my archives, you’ll see how crappy my pictures were back in 2010!
Here’s to another great year. You do have a lot of great content here! I hope you triple your revenue this year!

Thanks Nicolette. I’ve been wondering what your story was! I didn’t realize you had another site – that’s amazing that it hit a million page views in 6 months! I still haven’t hit a million page views!!
I have definitely thought about selling some kind of product, but as of yet, I haven’t figured out what on earth that might be. And possibly an e-book at some point too. All in good time I suppose?
I can imagine that you have seen a huge evolution in blogging if you have been doing it for 4 years. I’d love to figure out how to diversify my income a little bit more. I work full time on top of blogging so it’s really hard to find the time to expand my blogging horizons, so to speak. It really is a labour of love.
I really appreciate your advice!
Debbie
